Ingredients

  • 1/4 Cup Plain Flour
  • 2 Tbsp Caster Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • 1/4 Tsp Baking Powder
  • 45 mls Milk
  • 30 mls Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tbsp Chocolate Chips

Method

  1. Add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and baking powder to a large microwave-safe mug. Stir until well combined.
  2. Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract (if using). Mix until a smooth batter forms, making sure there are no dry pockets of flour.
  3. Stir in the chocolate chips or place them in the centre of the batter for a gooey chocolate middle.
  4. Microwave on high for 60–90 seconds, depending on the power of your microwave. The cake should have risen and look just set on top.
  5. Let the mug cake rest for 1 minute before serving, as it will continue to cook slightly and cool to a safe temperature.
  6. Enjoy straight from the mug, or top with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, or fresh berries for an extra-special treat.

Notes

  • This is a single-serve microwave dessert, best eaten immediately while warm and fluffy.
  • Microwave power varies, so cooking time may need slight adjustment (start with 60 seconds and add in short bursts if needed).
  • Don’t overcook - the cake continues to set as it rests and overcooking can make it dry or rubbery.
  • For best texture, make sure all dry ingredients are fully mixed before adding wet ingredients.
  • You can easily customise it with peanut butter, chocolate chips, or a swirl of caramel.
  • If you prefer a less sweet version, reduce the sugar slightly without affecting the structure.
  • Best served with ice cream or cream for a café-style dessert at home.
